anti sasusaku essay Description: Just read it. I think my post is on capital punishment, the 4th or 5th page. The thing is I really dislike teammate pairings, why? Because of the seesaw effect, what is the seesaw effect? Let me explain it to you in a story. Team #99 is consisted of Boy #1, Boy #2 and Girl. Introduction Abortion? They were walking in a playground when Boy #2 spotted a seesaw and wanted to get on it so Boy1 and Boy2 get on two ends of the capital punishment seesaw. The boys ask Girl to come over too because she#39;s part of the team. Because Girl is friends with both of the team, she decides to adorno sit in the middle: Now, Team #99 is all happy playing on their perfectly balanced seesaw when suddenly Girl decides she has a crush on Boy1. After all, he#39;s cool, he#39;s handsome, way more attractive than Boy2 who can get really annoying. She#39;s going to want to get closer to capital research Boy1 on the seesaw.

Now substitute Team #99 with either Team7, Team Gai or Team Kurenai and you will catch my drift and capital punishment, what I#39;m saying. Paper Research? You see, Shikamaru particularly stands out of his group and as one of the original genin. He#39;s a genius, he was the paper introduction abortion only one to become a Chuunin in the fake exams and capital paper research, he went to attack the Akatsuki without the entrepreneurship and innovation essay aid of Chouji and Ino. In conclusion, the capital current situation of Team Asuma looks like this: Okay, look what happens if ShikaIno became canon: In turn, if InoCho happened, there would be some balance added to the team. Entrepreneurship And Innovation? You see, Sakura#39;s immaturity was especially shown on her relationship with Sasuke and Naruto. How the heck is she supposed to capital punishment research mature from multicultural, that stage of insulting Naruto and favoring Sasuke if she#39;s going to end up with Sasuke?

She can#39;t, it just doesn#39;t make sense. SasuSaku fan Wrote: Can#39;t she mature while liking Sasuke at punishment research the same time? Not in schubert essay the literary sense of things, and not according to my seesaw theory. Its not good symbolism. Sakura#39;s character development really does revolve around getting over Sasuke. Sakura ending up with Sasuke would show that she entirely revolves around him - exactly like the beginning of Part1 - and capital paper punishment, that would be leaving her with a 2Dimensional personality and character development. Excuse me, the main girl totally revolving on getting a boyfriend?

Sexism ahoy. How do you know that Sakura has no feelings for and persuasive essay Sasuke anymore? Several things. For one, she accepted going out on a date with Naruto. Last time I checked, friends hung out, not dated. If she still liked Sasuke in a romantic way, she would have not accepted going out on a date with anyone, I know I wouldn#39;t go out on a date with a guy if I was in love with someone else as it would just be leading them on. That#39;s not all, there#39;s also the scene where Sakura cut her hair. Remember why she grew it out?

For Sasuke. And what? She cut it. In a way, she is cutting away her feelings for punishment Sasuke. Sasuke kept Sakura immature. SasuSaku fan Wrote: Stronger possibly, but not mature. Let#39;s look at the bit after Naruto#39;s battle with Gaara. Entrepreneurship? Proof? Sakura#39;s character development did not start until after Sasuke left. Kishimoto said that Sakura#39;s feelings for capital research Sasuke were genuine unlike Ino#39;s#33; For one, never trust translators, especially when it comes to such a general word like #39;love#39;. Why?

Because its easy to introduction about argue that Sakura#39;s genuine feelings for Sasuke was just caring for a teammate and having a crush at the same time. This gives gives off the illusion that Sakura actually loves Sasuke, but its what it is, an punishment research illusion. Genuine love as a friend and teammate, yes, genuine romantic love, no. What about that scene in the forest when Sakura calmed Sasuke#39;s rage? (Its also where we get the schubert idea that she#39;s going to be his savior) Its been hinted at over and over again that Sasuke#39;s savior will be Naruto, and capital research, mainly Naruto and I will argue why later. Paper Introduction? The thing is, Naruto was unconscious, Lee was unconscious. No one else could have done it, in fact, they ALL had to be unconscious for punishment research Sakura to have that important hair-cutting scene I mentioned before. Either way, Sasuke was needed because at the time Sakura had stronger feelings for multicultural teaching paper him than Naruto and Lee and therefore provoked a stronger reaction. Besides, the scene happened before Sasuke chose to go with Orochimaru, and I#39;ll get back to that later. But Sakura told Sasuke that she loved him#33; Plus that she would give up everything to be with him#33; I think that proves only even more that that crush is immature because ALL of us are willing to do the same for capital paper our first love/crush, I know I did. How many do we actually end up with him? Very, very few, why?

Because we mature. In fact, if Sakura was mature by then, she wouldn#39;t have fallen for Sasuke to begin with. If you read A Hero of Our Time by Lermontov you#39;ll understand what I#39;m talking about. Term Paper Abortion? And no, I#39;m not comparing two works of punishment, two different artists, I#39;m using it as an example, just like I learn in my IB Junior year English class. (Mah skool is bedar dan urs lolol#33;1) (The above) was a SasuSaku moment#33; Sasuke left. End of story. What about Sakura#39;s reaction to Sai#39;s insult and Sai being so shocked about it?

Naruto#39;s reaction was exactly the same. However, the multicultural reason why Sai was shocked from Sakura#39;s reaction was because she used the same #39;smile to conceal intentions#39; tactic he uses, and punishment, that surprised him. The reason that scene was important was to show how bad Naruto felt on how he couldn#39;t stop Sasuke from betraying the village and because of that couldn#39;t defend him against entrepreneurship and innovation Sai#39;s insults. And how about when Sakura saw Sasuke again? She was very shocked. Capital Paper Punishment Research? The last time she had seen Sasuke was when she declared her supposed feelings for punishment him, and capital paper punishment research, now she saw Sasuke attempting to kill Naruto behind Orochimaru, hey, that#39;s stressful you know. Anybody would have been shocked if only out of fear. Introduction Abortion? Besides, even if you look for capital paper deeper meaning, it could only too easily mean that she gave up on him at that moment. We really don#39;t know, so no jumping to conclusions. Sakura spent all her time obsessing over Sasuke to only give it up later/End up with someone else? Yes actually, its called maturing and character development.

Hell, NARUTO is all about teaching research, friendship between the three teammates. Kishimoto isn#39;t going to throw that away in capital paper exchange for romance. This isn#39;t a shojo manga. The three saying their goals at the beginning could be seen as foreshadowing. Sasuke killing his brother and reviving his clan, Naruto becoming Hokage, and entrepreneurship, Sakura getting Sasuke. Lets look at capital paper that bit again, shall we?

Close, but no cigar. Sasuke and Naruto mentioned their goals, but Sakura only said her favorite thing was Sasuke and capital paper punishment research, that she hated Naruto. She never mentioned it was her goal to be with Sasuke. Besides, I think it was mentioned later that Sakura#39;s goal was to become a strong kunoichi, not end up with Sasuke. Its possible that Sasuke did have feelings for Sakura. No, its not. Why?

Well, because the so called love triangle that was shown to us when Sakura and capital paper punishment, Sasuke were introduced. Term Paper Introduction? Naruto having strong feelings for Sakura would be one side. Capital Paper? Sakura having strong feelings for Sasuke would be the other, and Sasuke having strong feelings for Naruto is the last. Between Expository And Persuasive? Sasuke: Don#39;t you envy him being alone, not having parents nag at you all the capital punishment time. You make me sick#33; Sasuke: You#39;re just as bad as Naruto. Capital Punishment? Why waste your time flirting when you should be practicing? Even his skills are better than yours#33; Neji to capital paper research Naruto (not exact quote): You have better eyes than mine. Only you can save Sasuke from darkness now. Warning: Yes, you guessed it, it is very pro-NaruHina.

NaruSaku fan Wrote: NaruHina has no chance of happening instead of conflict mockingbird essay, NaruSaku#33; I would agree. But remember my statement about how crushes wore off in Part 2? Lee#39;s crush wore off, Ino#39;s crush wore off, Sakura#39;s crush wore off, Hinata#39;s crush did not wear off. If Kishimoto would want to capital paper research put NaruSaku instead, he would have taken Hinata#39;s crush away instead of complicating things. He didn#39;t. Maybe he has planned doing something with them? Its sure been hinted at. And Innovation? NaruSaku fan: Naruto still loves/likes Sakura#33; No, he doesn#39;t. I won#39;t argue on Sakura loving Naruto, but if that#39;s the case, then its not requited.

Naruto knew and accepted that Sakura did not like him back in Part1 right before the the Sasuke Retrieval ARK: Naruto: Sakura-chan, you really like Sasuke huh? -smile- NaruSaku fan: What are you saying? Naruto never gives up, its his nindo#33; Sometimes part of learning is accepting that you lost and moving on. Even so, Naruto has never told Sakura he loved her, and it was never his goal to get together with Sakura. Naruto#39;s goals are to be acknowledged, to become Hokage and to bring Sasuke back. Besides, why would he need to work to be acknowledged by Sakura when he is already acknowledged by Hinata? Let#39;s look at Hinata#39;s theme: Believe in yourself.

How would that theme fit if Naruto ends up never acknowledging Hinata and rejects her for capital Sakura, someone who rejected him throughout most of Part1? That#39;s not fair. Oh, and not to forget, Naruto#39;s nindo is never take back my words, not giving up. He has never mentioned he would get Sakura to love him in capital paper punishment research Part1, so I don#39;t see what the problem is. Paper Research? Naruto loves Sakura#33; Again, I#39;ll refer to the manga; And by the way, Hinata#39;s theme is exactly the same. NaruSaku fan: NaruSaku is essay canon#33; Have they told eachother they love eachother? No. Have they kissed?

No. I know it is a shonen manga but there are always something that will indicate a pairing is canon. Look at paper punishment Asuma/Kurenai, when Asuma died Kurenai had the bad omen, they constantly dated as you can see when Team Asuma had flashbacks. Difference And Persuasive Essay? Asuma/Kurenai was canon. NaruSaku is paper punishment not, if it were I wouldn#39;t be argueing this. The hero always gets the girl/Sakura is first prize while Hinata is runner-up, Naruto can#39;t get her#33; Prizes? Sexism alert#33; Look people, it wouldn#39;t be the first time the adorno main character would get paired up with a side-character and it certainly wouldn#39;t be the last. Women aren#39;t prizes to be won. Capital Punishment? What about Yamato#39;s statement?

Sakura in reality, you. -297. Oh, and talking about Ch297, guess who was on the cover of that chapter? You guessed it, Hinata Hyuuga. No, it wasn#39;t a coincidence and paper abortion, I#39;ll go more into paper research it later. (This is probably Kishimoto#39;s way of essay, saying You guessed wrong#33; ) Naruto would get Sakura to capital punishment acknowledge him by capital paper punishment research, loving him#33; Not necessarily. Sakura already acknowledges Naruto, she already knows about Kyuubi, she knows him probably better than most people. If the above is the case, then why hasn#39;t NaruSaku happened yet?

They already know eachother well, you#39;d think they#39;d be totally over on eachother by now but they#39;re not. Makes you think, doesn#39;t it? What about the date? I#39;m no hypocrite. I think Kishimoto put the date as his own way of showing us that Sakura forgot her feelings for paper Sasuke without having to term put actual important romance in it and adding to us that ShikaTema hint.

Hell, Naruto hadn#39;t even said the capital paper punishment word #39;date#39; yet so I don#39;t think it counts in this category. Naruto only teases Sakura, trying to cheer themselves up and schubert essay, doing it for capital paper research #39;old time#39;s sake#39; and Naruto hasn#39;t mentioned any romantic intentions to essay Sakura since then. Capital Paper Research? As I mentioned before, Naruto no longer has a crush on Sakura. Oh, and by the way, according to what#39;s translated, Kishimoto mentioned that the date was not romance. No, I am not a hypocrite, love is a general word, romance is not. Adorno? The NaruHina in the anime were only punishment research fillers#33; True. But why did the animators necessarily put NaruHina in the fillers? Why#39;d they do that if they knew it could end some other way ending up with loads of dissapointed fans on their asses? It would be ridiculous and unprofessional. Its absolutely normal for manga authors to adorno schubert tell animators how they#39;re going to punishment research end the manga or at least what they have planned.

I don#39;t think the multicultural animators are stupid enough to put NaruHina in if they knew NaruSaku would or could happen. NaruSaku fan Wrote: Hinata#39;s family wouldn#39;t let her#33;/Incest is practiced in capital the Hyuuga clan#33; One; It has NEVER been mentioned that the Hyuuga#39;s intermarry and I believe that#39;s just NejiHina fanon speculation. Two; Its been foreshadowed that the entrepreneurship essay Hyuugas will have a family reform and three; I don#39;t think they#39;d mind an exception to capital paper research that rule with the schubert essay future Hokage. Angst just makes it all better. Hinata can be strong without Naruto#33; Wouldn#39;t that show her character development like you said with the crushes? If anyone were to ask me this, I#39;d applaud them for being a good debater, but it won#39;t work on capital, me. Hinata#39;s source for inspiration? Naruto, Hinata#39;s reason to grow? Naruto.

Unlike Sakura#39;s crush for Sasuke keeping her immature, Hinata#39;s crush for Naruto did the opposite, made her mature, made her stronger, how would that fit if Hinata ends up giving up? Yes, Hinata can become acknowledged by her clan and essay, become strong, but it wouldn#39;t resolve her feelings for capital punishment Naruto. I already proved how Sakura#39;s feelings for Sasuke had resolved, how Naruto#39;s feelings for Sakura had resolved, but Hinata#39;s - maybe being a minor character - feelings have yet to be resolved. Hell, its even be foreshadowed that Hinata will eventually confess her feelings for entrepreneurship and innovation Naruto, let#39;s look at the second databook: Hinata, always feeling the same towards Naruto. Will the day come when she can face him directly? Oh, and let#39;s look at capital paper research this picture Kishimoto himself drew, this is not fanart. This being the rough draft of the cover of the so on entrepreneurship and innovation essay, the familiar chapter of 297: This golden light is only too obviously Naruto. Oh, and just to stick it in here, Hinata was the one that saw Naruto leave Konoha, not Sakura. - There#39;s no reason for capital paper Naruto and Sakura to be lovers as they#39;re perfectly fine as friends. Sakura already has a good portion of the spotlight, especially in punishment a shonen manga. However, everytime Hinata gets the capital punishment research spotlight it has something to do with Naruto.

NaruHina not happening would be severely neglecting Hinata, as a minor character, and her theme. - The Seesaw effect. - If Kishimoto wanted NaruSaku he would have made Hinata#39;s feelings fade, but he didn#39;t. - If Kishimoto wanted NaruSaku, he would have probably made it canon by kill mockingbird essay, now, they#39;re all alone without Sasuke, so why hasn#39;t it happened? -The NARUTO manga is all about research, friendship. Kishimoto is multicultural research not going to capital research throw that away to adorno pave way for a romantic relationship between Team7 and/or Sai. He#39;s going to want to either leave them single or pair them up outside of the team. More reference to capital paper punishment research the seesaw effect. - Naruto already gave up on Sakura at the end of mockingbird, Part1. It would be pointless to capital paper bring back his feelings; it wouldn#39;t help the plot, and it certainly wouldn#39;t help his character development.

-Sakura knows about Hinata#39;s feelings for Naruto, it wouldn#39;t be very nice on her part to still chase after him. -Continuing from the last point, both Kiba and Shino know very well of Hinata#39;s feelings for Naruto and kill, support her. If NaruHina didn#39;t happen, it would not only bring down Hinata, but also all of capital punishment, Team 8/Kurenai. Hell, it seems like all of Team 8#39;s purpose revolves around Hinata#39;s feelings for Naruto. I could use how Shino wasn#39;t included in term introduction the Sasuke Retrieval ARK as evidence for it. EDIT2: This is an arguement supported with facts like anything you write in capital paper research school. It is not a fact and I#39;m not saying that SasuSaku nor NaruSaku will never happen in conflict mockingbird the future, I#39;m argueing against SasuSaku and NaruSaku being canon now. Research? I#39;m not claiming all I say is a fact, its an conflict kill mockingbird essay opinion where I use a theory. Now go take an English class and write a few essays on books before coming back. -kicked out punishment of the AMC-

You see, Sakura#39;s immaturity was especially shown on her relationship with Sasuke and Naruto. Expository? How the heck is capital paper she supposed to mature from that stage of insulting Naruto and favoring Sasuke if she#39;s going to paper research end up with Sasuke? She can#39;t, it just doesn#39;t make sense. I think that she realized that the world DOESN#39;T revolve around her sasuke-kun, but I still think that she loves him. So you#39;re right, she matures by realizing that the world is entirely made of her and Sasuke--- but that doesn#39;t deny the right for her to capital punishment research still love him, and for him to have the potential of loving her back.

In fact, there are a lot of paper introduction about abortion, things Sasuke does that hints that he cares for Sakura-- maybe not as a lover, but at paper punishment least as a friend. I think that, not only and persuasive essay does Sakura#39;s character develop, but her realationship with Sasuke, and even Naruto develops as well, as time passes.

palindrome essay A Chronotope of Revolution: The Palindrome from the Perspective of Cultural Semiotics. By Erika Greber (Univ. of Munich / UC Irvine) Take the word ropot [murmur], Cincinnatus' brother-in-law, the wit, was saying to him, and paper punishment research, read it backwards. Eh? Comes out funny, doesn't it? [--› topor : the axe] - Voz'mi-ka slovo ropot , - govoril Cincinnatu ego shurin, ostriak, -- I prochti obratno. A? Smeshno poluchaetsia? Vladimir Nabokov, Invitation to a Beheading (1)

In the following abstract, I propose to kill mockingbird analyze the palindrome in terms of cultural semiotics and to explore the capital paper punishment, subliminal semantic concepts and difference between essay, metaphorological implications which are involved in the genre's postmodern renaissance and which articulate certain political anxieties (something which applies especially to the recent rise of palindrome writing and criticism in Russian, German and Serbo-Croatian literatures). Capital Paper Punishment? (2) The palindrome, a special, restricted case of anagram, foregrounds the principle of letter permutation by between expository and persuasive essay its strictly sequential proceeding and thus has become the prototype and symbol of anagrammatic letter revolution (in Greek: anagrammatismos , in Latin: revolutio ). The permutational 'revolutional' principle seems to be inscribed as an archi-semantic matrix into the symbolic structure of the palindrome genre, into its unconscious -- a potential which is being activated in crucial situations of cultural change. The idea of the palindrome is closely associated with the material and corporeal aspect of verbal signification. Animal images are used for capital, symbolizing the capital paper, palindromic processes of regression and circularity: the paper punishment, crab or cancer, and the snake biting its own tail (the gnostic image of Ouroboros). Likewise, the mirror metaphor has been applied to palindrome structures. Paper Punishment? Largely a visual phenomenon, the paper research, palindrome epitomizes the spatiality of language and between essay, scripture, something indicated already on the metaphorological plane of classical terminology: running back again ( palindromos ), stepping back ( versus retrogradus ) -- a temporal motion in space. Capital Paper Punishment Research? Allowing for reversibility of the linear discourse, the palindrome represents the very idea of transformation and metamorphosis. Palindromic reversion is a device for breaking up the linearity of speech and, by implication, the irreversibility of time.

Irreversibility thematizes itself in adorno schubert the palindrome form by eating itself up (a quotation from Oskar Pastior, the outstanding contemporary German palindrome poet). Sequentiality and causality of time and space are annihilated in the palindromic motion. Thus, the palindrome can be conceived of as a chronotope of revolution. ('chrono-topos': time-space). In anagrammatic and palindromic readings of words, the regular referential meaning is dismissed and signification emerges from the pure signifier, the paper punishment, material letter. Associations with alphabet soup letters (or with the so-called Russian bread letters) are quite to the point and underline the aspect of play and adorno, pleasure inherent in the genre. Food and eating are prominent motifs in palindrome texts, and palindrome discourse is essentially on research eating and incorporation. (Cf. e.g. the term introduction about abortion, Lucullan palindrome by capital paper research Semyon Kirsanov, 1966, 77, and its intertextual counterpart by Aleksandr Bubnov, 1992, 17, displaying cannibalistic motifs). The genre of the palindrome, playful and ludic as it is, nonetheless has a strong implication of violence. Difference Between And Persuasive? In the work of capital punishment, its foremost practitioners, Velemir Khlebnikov and teaching paper, Vladimir Nabokov, as well as some of their postmodern successors, the palindrome is closely linked to death, cannibalism, beheading, and murder. That violence has long been attributed to letter permutation is punishment research, explicitly testified to adorno essay by a 17th century German and Latin riddle poem on the anagram, as well as by the combinatorial literature of research, German Baroque writers, such as Justus Georg Schottel's linguistic treatise with the martial title Horrendum bellum grammaticale / Der schreckliche Sprachkrieg (The Horrible Language War) referring to the times of the Thirty Years' War.

A palindromic reading of the term 'palindrome' itself in schubert essay its German form ( Palindrom / Mordnilap ) points to the idea of murder, Mord . The palindromic letter play produces a 'poetic cannibalism' of a mostly grotesque type, but there are also instances of frightening or macabre uses of the genre. Such a semantic double-sidedness is quite in line with the palindrome's old Baroque name: versus diabolicus (a name which also indicates the ancient affinity of the capital paper punishment research, palindrome to magic and sorcery). Violence in palindrome texts has doubtlessly quite different motivations, but can possibly be attributed to a common ground. Letter permutation is an operation presupposing the capital research, cutting up of the whole word into parts, it is an operation in the surgical sense. Punishment Research? And the dismemberment of the word is prefigured, as Vladimir Toporov has postulated in carrying on Ferdinand de Saussure's anagram theory, in multicultural teaching paper the sacral act of the priest dismembering the sacrificial creature.

By anagrammatic dismembering and dissemination of the paper, divine name(s) into the sounds and letters of poetic speech, the priest-poet and primeval grammarian imitated symbolically the dismemberment of the body and the rearrangement of the parts on the sacrificial altar. This mythopoetic Urszene of anagrammatic practices contains the idea of mimetic correspondence between name and thing, between language sign and signified object, and accounts for the Cratylic conception regularly implied in anagrams and palindromes ( nomen est omen ). From this perspective, it seems significant that Toporov's own telling name contains the very omen of palindrome violence: the difference and persuasive, axe ( topor ). Incidentally, the name of Khlebnikov, recognized initiator of paper punishment research, today's palindrome poetry, is a telling name with the connotation of bread, khleb , and has been cut up and sliced by and innovation later poets' letter operations: a sacred name sacrificed on paper research the altar of the palindrome. (As the self-reflexive palindrome invites self reflection, I may add that my own name represents a cyclical self-contained palindrome, something I was unaware of multicultural, until the Russian palindrome poet Aleksandr Bubnov dedicated a metareflexive palindrome to me playing on the name and the letters mordnilap and dealing, incidentally, with the punishment, then vital topic of putsches). In the aesthetic system of Russian Futurism -- and probably of the classical avant-garde movements in adorno general --, cut-up plays a major role (with frequent use of corresponding chiffres like cut, axe , etc.) and connects to the concept of punishment research, montage and collage. The eminent status of the cut-up code in avant-garde thought might be the reason why an avant-garde palindrome writer like Khlebnikov serves as relay for postmodern palindrome writers, Russian or non-Russian. Significantly, symbolic killing and extermination is a central aspect in Baudrillard's anagram concept: as the stock of letters is to be consumed without any rest, the capital punishment, name is annihilated so that for Baudrillard anagrammatic poetry is in effect a mode of extermination rather than manifestation of the name and the anagrammatic process is linked to the principle of self-consuming. In palindrome discourse, self-consumption combines with self-generation.

Characteristically, the palindrome is an old symbol of the paper punishment research, idea of perpetuum mobile , the autopoietic force that keeps itself going. In accordance with these conceptual traits, the expository and persuasive essay, palindrome can become an apophatic figure, the verbal possibility of non-speaking. Punishment? The paradox Jacques Derrida is essay, approaching in Comment ne pas parler is expressed by the cover cartoon: a mirror-shaped NON that marks the evacuated centre of negativity, the evacuated circle or zero. Similarly, Edmond Jabès makes use of a meaningful palindrome in punishment the context of cabbalistic book mysticism: NUL - L'UN, whereby progressive-regressive readings form the idea of eternal mutability of Zero into One and vice versa. As a means of simultaneously doing and undoing, the palindrome genre seems to stand for and innovation essay, autopoiesis, paradox and undecidability, something which possibly accounts for paper punishment, its boom in postmodern literature. Khlebnikov was the first to choose revolt as a subject for a palindrome text, his long poem Razin (1920) with the cossack Sten'ka Razin as a symbolic figure of the revolutionary. After the defeat of the Communist regime, this poem's palindromic pattern was interpreted as an early anticipation of the revision of kill mockingbird, history eventually to punishment research come (Andrei Voznesenskii in punishment research 1990). It seems that palindrome writers and critics in research the nineties tend to kill mockingbird thematize revolution and paper, change due to their increasingly conscious recognition of the 'revolutionary' semantics of the genre.

Contemporary Russian palindrome writers have brought forth lively poetic milieus in Moscow and Kursk with numerous activities such as a palindrome concourse, a palindrome festival (creating even a drama and sonnets in palindromic form), a conference on the culturological, linguistic, literary, mathematical, magical, philosophical and other aspects of the mockingbird essay, palindrome at a palindromic date 21.12.1991 (the next conference is scheduled for 2002), and punishment research, a special fanzine named AMFIRIFMA (amphibic rhyme), featured by the Kursk Club of Palindromes and Palindromaniacs and its main activist Aleksandr Bubnov, a well-versed author of intricate palindromes who recently received a Ph.D. with a dissertation on the linguistic features of the Russian palindrome. It seems that in post-Soviet Russia, in capital paper punishment a cultural situation in paper punishment research which people would like to reverse history and make a whole era disappear, an artistic form like the capital paper punishment research, palindrome which can demonstrate the capital punishment research, reversibility of expository and persuasive, time by paper retrograde devices of letter magic has its own fascination and attraction. Furthermore, the apotropaic effect of introduction about abortion, ancient palindrome rites would be welcome -- an incantation of the symmetry of paper punishment, form directed against the imponderabilities of social change, an exorcism of political and economical disorder through the order of adorno essay, alphabet letters. The cultural and political framework in which the palindrome genre could flourish was often one of rapid and paper punishment research, unpremeditated change, of revolutionary situations. In Russian literary history, this would apply to the times of the adorno essay, leftist revolutions in capital punishment 1917 and the following Civil War, the brief thaw of the Khrushchev era, the Perestroika period and the present Post-Communist era. But even the first Russian palindromes emerged during a period of radical change, namely in the Baroque period during the reign of Peter the Great and his far-reaching reforms. What accounts for much of permutational poetry in these periods is, it must be conceded, the paper research, interest in ludism shared by the Baroque, Avant-garde, and Postmodernism, yet a comparative perspective adds specific evidence that there is more to the intensity of palindrome phenomena than just word play.

In two other contexts of paper punishment research, enormous political and cultural upheavals in the wake of the Communist breakdown the palindrome has become topical: in Germany around 1989 and the immediate post-unification years, and in term paper introduction abortion Serbo-Croatian literature between 1991 and 1995 in paper punishment research connection with the entrepreneurship, post-Yugoslav cultural split and capital punishment, war. In German feuilletons, the palindrome suddenly became a topic of broader public interest with the unexpected participation of people outside literary and academic circles (cf. FAZ Nov. 1989 immediately after the multicultural teaching research, fall of the Berlin wall, SZ June 1990, ZEIT July 1993, Herbert Pfeiffer's Wende-Köpfe 1993): a celebration of the 'velvet revolution' or already the symptom of a desire for reversal of unification? In the capital punishment, Croatian capital Zagreb there arose a debate on the palindrome's meaning as a symbol of cross-cultural interaction referring to the two dialects involved in the Serbo-Croatian language, one argument being that palindromic devices are in fact two-faced speech and represent an illusionary and utopian pseudo-monolingualism, and multicultural teaching, an opposite argument that palindrome poetry might symbolically keep up the promise of dialogue and double-/pluri-vocal coexistence in a once multicultural context (Dubravka Orai #99; -Toli Orai #99; : Palindromska apokalipsa , 1992/1993; Dubravka Ugresi #99; , Die Kultur der Lüge , 1995). Orai #99; -Toli #99; criticizes the conception that the palindrome's two parts are identical as utopian and questions whether the meaning must be the same in both the left-right and right-left direction, from the West and from the East. Here, the space of scripture is interpreted geographically and culturally, in relation to the cultural opposition between Croatian (Western) and Serbian (Eastern) languages, alphabets and capital punishment research, cultures, whereby the adorno, palindrome form is seen as false aesthetic medium of leveling the two different branches into the artificial construct of Yugoslav newspeak.

From this follows in her argument, explicitly, the announcement of the apocalypse and, implicitly, the project of dissociation of the two cultures, decontamination and purification. At this point, the project turns out to be itself utopian, as this supposed cultural purity is a dangerous illusion. Capital Punishment? Also, this conception neglects the third party, the Bosnian culture which is historically defined by syncretism. For a semiotic analysis of the palindrome in cultural terms, the stance of Juri Lotman is preferable, also because his argumentation is more precise. Palindromic symmetry is of an enantiomorphic type, i.e. Term Paper Introduction About? mirror symmetry where as a matter of fact no part can be superimposed on the other.

From this Lotman derives a dialogic conception of the palindrome, where the left and right side are recognized as similar yet different. The common palindromic form may illustrate this: although the signs are materially identical (containing the same letters), they differ semantically and have different meanings. Lotman, too, translates this concept into cultural terms (e.g., cultural communities like 'occident' and 'orient' become enantiomorphic pairs with an capital research, operating functional asymmetry). Such a dialogic conceptualization of the palindrome's generic structure can be taken as a project of cultural dialogue operating in conditions of hybridity. This could also apply to different phases within a culture which can be understood as engaging in mutual dialogue, before and after a revolutionary turn. Palindromic letter revolution and reversion is readable as an artistic form of cultural critique and as a culture's desire for reorganization and reversal. (1) Literal translation. In the authorized English version of Nabokov's novel, translated by essay his son Dmitrij, an capital paper punishment research, anagram is teaching research paper, used instead of the palindrome to convey the desired connotations and punishment research, result in the word 'axe': Take the multicultural teaching paper, word 'anxiety', Cincinnatus' brother-in-law, the wit, was saying to him. Maybe this is one of the capital punishment reason why more than 50 percent of the recruitment went to failure.

After all if you think about it a resume is paper punishment, just a piece of paper, do it in punishment research, their way there's no biggie, we are the term paper introduction about abortion seekers and they are the choosers. It's the reality. With all the people complaining, it's almost funny to be honest.. Like businesses not updating their Word programs when one comes out every couple of capital paper punishment research, years(costing a very large amount of difference expository essay, money) and facing some compatibility issues (like not being able to read .docx and such new formats), many large businesses will not update/change their text-scanning software and they will not be able to research, read stuff like .pdf no matter how 'easy' it apparently is to extract it. If it costs more money/time, they probably don't want to about, deal with it. And I don't blame them one bit.. As for your I spent sooo much time designing this fancy resum© in .pdf, and paper research, why won't they read it? :'( the skipping out on entrepreneurship and innovation, some resum©s probably helps these companies. Capital Punishment Research! Not only essay, does it lower the capital paper number of resum©s(probably somewhere in the hundreds or thousands) that they have to scan through (thereby lowering the load on computers and the staff hired to adorno, look at resum©s), fancy .pdfs are going to have a higher file size than a simple .doc.

The only place where I could see that being justified is in a small design business. Otherwise, your pretty little .pdf means absolutely nothing to them. You can make some very nice documents in most word processors if you know what you`re doing, it shouldn`t be a problem at all. Use your design skills there(not really tech skills to paper punishment, be honest, anyone can use that program). Overall, a large business that needs a text-extractor will not care if your resum© is a little bit nicer than the others. They don`t care, in a place where they employ 1000 people if one singular person who was above average was cut out in introduction, favour of someone who was average. 0 poos given.

If you are trying to capital paper punishment, highlight yourself before you even get a job offer, do it by researching industry standards(such as this one) and use them to mockingbird, your advantage! You are now one of the 'x' number of people who didn`t get cut out by the text-scanning system for using a.pdf, congratulations! People, please stop whining, use this stuff to capital research, your advantage! @ Palkia The Office Open XML (DOCX, XLSX etc) standard was designed by multicultural Microsoft in capital punishment research, 2006 for multicultural research, Office 2007. Capital Punishment! Most businesses should have a version of Word thats capable of opening a DOCX, as it's over 8 years old.

XPDF, a FREE and open source PDF text extractor has been around since 1995. There's zero excuse for these software packages to capital paper punishment, not extract text out of a PDF. This just absolutely upsets me in so many ways. Capital Paper Punishment Research! Why are you recruiters depended on a system that refuses to adapt? I have been spending hours on my resume to stick out and just to multicultural research, find out that it simply doesn't matter what efforts I have made. Yes, I do use these key word in paper punishment, my resume because I was aware of the ATF searches but I had no idea about the PDF issue. I had preferred to submit my resume in PDF because I created my resume on InDesign to highlight my tech and essay, design skills. and plus I figured recruiter would have issues with layout if it was in punishment, a doc format. I am sooo upset right now. Teaching! Some digital age we are in. This is absolutely ridiculous.

What kind of capital punishment, system is not reading my bloody resume in PDF. RETARDED DESIGN IDEA!! DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE LOSING THEIR MINDS BECAUSE THEY DON 'T KNOW THIS CRUCIAL FUCKING REQUIREMENTS ?? IT 'S NOT LIKE THEY'RE IT TECHNICIANS!! @ huntingbird30 I literally crying. I have sent so many resumes in PDF because they were designed and I spent hours on it.. and to find out they won't be looked just makes me sooo angry!. I have sent over 1000 resumes under pdf not one response. only in america lol.

What about sending a simple version of the adorno schubert PDF resume, WITH the PDF resume? The simple version would have all formating removed, and would be the capital paper research machine readable version, while the PDF itself would be the version the HR person would refer to. What about sending a simple version of the PDF resume, WITH the PDF resume? The simple version would have all formating removed, and would be the difference between and persuasive machine readable version, while the punishment PDF itself would be the mockingbird version the HR person would refer to. Seriously?

PDF text extraction is easy, there are a million open source tools for this with MIT license. Any program that is punishment research, designed to and innovation essay, scan text out of files that cannot read PDFs has some lazy ass programmers. We should not prepare the resumes format in the PDF's style. The recruiters won't allow this type of format. free pdf (lol) resume hosting at http://fresu.me. Hey this is a nice one. Capital Punishment! or pdf resume you upload. Entrepreneurship And Innovation Essay! www.ikrut.com = recruitment just got free.

Regarding PDF files. Disclosure: I have NEVER seen the recruiter side of an ATS tool. Punishment! There seems to be two ways to create a PDF: 1) print, scan, save 2) direct from software Option 1 would require OCR technology to convert the multicultural teaching scanned picture to text. While this improved over the years it is not perfect and formatting will drive OCR nuts. Option 2 usually embeds the raw text as well. These are the capital paper research PDF files you can use the capital punishment search function of the reader with. My assumption, I know how that can turn out, is that the capital punishment ATS systems should be able to pull the raw text from the computer generated file where Option 1 would cause issues.

Regardless, why buck the system? Use the .doc or .txt format when applying and avoid the issue. If you want to publish your resume online and are concerned with someone modifying it then use the PDF format there or set the multicultural teaching research .doc file to read only. Just a thought. Rich, First, I really enjoy your site and your posts . eh, most of which I agree with. :-) Second, this PDF-v-DOC discussion is one that I have had with with many people over the last several years as I lecture on resume writing and online job searching here in punishment research, the Atlanta area. Kill! I wrote a entry for my blog (http://wp.me/puGHZ-c8) about a year ago and discussed this very issue.

But, like in paper punishment research, my post, let me extend your warning comments to include the .ODT format as well as the .PDF format. Both are a challenge to current-day ATS platforms. For those of you not familiar with .ODT, it's the default file format for schubert essay, Open Documents created with a variety of Open word processing packages, such as Sun's Open Office suite. While it is a standard format (ISO/IEC), it's not broadly accepted on ATS platforms yet without additional (sometimes costly) add-on packages. So, as Rich (and others) has pointed out effectively, when applying on-line, the de facto standard for resume file formats continues to be .DOC (.DOCX is almost on-par with .DOC .. give it another year) -- stick with it for now. Keep the great posts coming along! Pardon my ignorance (I'm a job seeker, not a recruiter) but what do you mean by keywords of capital paper, your industry? How can someone describe their experience and skills without using the same words as you may use to search for candidates? Are seekers and recruiters using such different language? How can I get a list of keywords for my industry, so I make sure my resume is written in the language of kill mockingbird, recruiters? Many thanks.

Use a word cloud tool like wordle.net or tagcloud.com to build a visual of the job descriptions. 1) find a job description that interests you 2) copy text 3) go to word cloud tool, paste text 4) look at visual representation of the words on the cloud. Capital Paper! The keywords should be in a larger font Just a thought. Rich, Great column! Just one question regarding, My allergies are absolutely killing me.

Couldn't be allergic to corn, could you?! AMEN! It is one of my biggest pet peeves, is havinbg PDF resumes. The only thinkg that drives me over the edge is people who send the resume with the title of resume.doc. Kill! These people do not think anyone else use that defualt title. I used to rename them to be a nice recruiter, but when i have volumes of resumes coming in, in paper, is easier to adorno essay, reject it since my ATS will not process it since there is ALWAYS one already in the database! Hi Michael - Thanks for the comment and stopping by! YES, I hate generally titled resumes as well. I may need to write a post simply on that. Thanks! I have also found that it is good to capital punishment, place a list of key words at the bottom in multicultural teaching paper, very small type and paper punishment, white characters that do not show up when printed however, many ATSs still pick up those key words when searching resumes.

Just make sure those key words are relevant to the job and the industry otherwise they are of essay, no use. Hey RBC - thanks for commenting. Excellent point about capital punishment keywords. Very important to kill mockingbird essay, note that ATS look for punishment research, keywords and that's how people are found in the systme. Thanks. @rbc, if you are thoughtful in developing accomplishment-based bullets that include the crucial keywords of your industry, then you won't need to capital punishment research, rely on tricks such as white font, right? Recruiters and employers will quickly lose respect (and the contact info) of candidates who can't play straight. You can also introduce keywords in your Summary Statement (not objective statement). Don't spend your energy playing games, but rather, spend your energy creating useful and unique content. We have a saying here at ResuMAYDAY and that's, give yourself the capital paper best resume that you've EARNED.

Nothing more, nothing less. With a bit of schubert essay, wordsmithing and strategy, you won't have to resort to trickery. Great comment, ResuMAYDAY! Trickery is certainly not ideal. Thanks for stopping by! Hi Rich - I always knew that job seekers should definitely have multiple formats of their resume, but I didn't realize that submitting .PDFs could be such a problem. If a job seeker is capital paper research, emailing their resume, what do you think of attaching all the formats they have (or at least both a .Doc and .PDF)? Whenever there's an online system, the .Doc submission always works better, even if .PDF can be submitted. In those instances, it seems like the adorno schubert essay .Doc just translates better into the system.

Thanks for capital paper research, the tips! - Corey Career Blogger at Urban Interns. Hey Corey - thanks for the comment. Attaching all of the formats may work if it's just through email. Difference Between Expository And Persuasive Essay! That's a good way to capital paper research, go about it if they know for multicultural teaching research, sure it's going to capital research, a recruiters inbox. The .doc is research, always best for online submissions and online systems.

These systems are the ATS which basically shred up the PDF format. Thanks again! Rich, Great tip on .docx vs. Paper! .doc. It's something I suspected, but wasn't entirely sure. Thanks for the heads up. Lee. Hey Lee - thanks for the comment. I'll give Sarah White the nod for that tip!

That was from her brain! Thanks! Geez . just when I'd decided (based on conflict kill mockingbird, other articles) that I was going to start sending out .pdf versions of my resume, I read this! Frankly, I have a jam-packed resume, reflecting 30+ years of paper punishment research, experience in four or five (depending how one wants to slice-and-dice it) areas of the Communications field, and it has a nasty habit of trying very hard to push the last few items off the paper abortion second page when left to capital paper, the variables of how different systems display a .doc file. Entrepreneurship And Innovation! Obviously, having a .pdf version keeps all the info where it's supposed to be . however, if nobody is actually READING these (either on-screen or in a print-out), I guess it doesn't matter. Heck, from reading the above I'm wondering if the no more than two pages rule is still active . if it's a computer scanning my resume for paper research, keywords, I can spew out a 10-page EPIC of research, my professional life and research, stuff it to the gills with likely keywords. Eh . anyway . Term Paper About Abortion! you've convinced me to capital punishment research, keep attaching the .doc version for the time being! - B.T. Hey BTRIPP - I'm sorry to have made you start over on this!

It may be a hassle, but it MIGHT Be your best option to conflict mockingbird essay, switch to the word resume. Capital Paper Research! KEEP both formats, but only send the PDF to smaller companies. Good luck! Excellent advice, Rich. First off, I completely, absolutely, 100 percent agree with everything you've written so don't take anything below as being at all contradictory but instead just additional to what you've written: 1. Erin's comment from adorno schubert, a few minutes ago is one that we hear a lot. If she could only see what employers see when they're looking at their ATS then she'd understand. Capital Research! Most of the ATS software vendors seem to think that formatting is for wimps and what recruiters really want is a page of capital paper, unformatted, straight text with no discernible columns, bullet points, numbering, etc. So all that nice formatting like putting your dates of capital punishment research, employment in one column and your job title and difference between and persuasive essay, description in another so employers can read at a glance where you've been and paper, what you've done?

Forget about it. Term Paper Introduction! It all mashes together. Capital! So any benefit that she or other job seekers perceive being there from a PDF versus a Word document quickly vanishes as soon as that PDF is sucked into a typical ATS. 2. In the teaching paper 20 years since I founded this business, I've never talked with a recruiter who speaks highly of capital paper punishment, their ATS. Never. 3. I don't recall the exact percentage but it is something like 60 percent of resumes in ATS are essentially invisible to the recruiters using their ATS.

The percentage was given to conflict mockingbird, me by the folks at Preptel, which have created a system which will convert the paper research resume you post at a job board or other web site into a format that is compatible with each of the major ATS and then posts your resume for you. Incredibly, putting dates in one column and job titles and adorno essay, descriptions in another -- like most resumes seem to be -- is capital punishment research, one of the biggest problems for the ATS. These resumes often end up with all of the kill mockingbird essay information from the first column (the dates) being lumped together in one paragraph and then all of the information from the second column (job titles and descriptions) appearing at the bottom of the resume so the recruiter has no easy way of determining which dates go with which jobs. These ATS have only been around for capital paper punishment, 15 years. You'd think they'd care more about the candidates and their clients. If they did, you'd never see a problem like this. By the way, we'll be implementing a partnership with Preptel this fall so candidates who apply to jobs on our site will have their resumes properly posted to the employer's ATS. 4. If the employer's system allows you to paper, do so, upload your resume as a PDF, Word document, AND a plain text document. Capital Paper Research! Look long and hard at that last one. Adorno! If you can read it on capital punishment, your screen, then the research employer should be able to read it in their ATS.

Plain text documents force you to capital paper punishment, trash all of those columns, bullets, etc. so what you end up with is term about abortion, a 1993-looking document that should be perfectly compatible with just about paper punishment every ATS out there and that will greatly increase your chances of the employer being able to find you. 5. Employers using ATS find candidates who have applied to teaching research paper, jobs not by capital reading through a stack of kill mockingbird, resumes like so many candidates think but instead by keyword searching. An employer might receive hundreds or even thousands of resumes per day and capital research, many of them tell me that at least 90 percent are unqualified. Rather than wasting time reading through the essay 90 percent, the employers try to find the paper punishment research 10 percent by punishment running keyword searches just like we all do when we go to Google, Bing, or Yahoo. But just like those searches, you often end up missing what you're searching for paper research, because you didn't use the right keyword phrase or the page that has the information you want didn't include the keyword phrase that you used when you were searching for conflict mockingbird essay, it. So think about what keyword phrases the employer would use -- even if there's an capital paper punishment research, idiot on their end -- and then use those same phrases in your resume. Keep up the good work, Rich! What is the best thing to do if i have pdf resume? im not getting any response. Hey Steven - Anything you say I listen to. Disagreeing with me or not.

Not blowing smoke up your ass here, but I do tend to learn a thing or two from you when you speak (or type). I agree with you on your points. Between! Specifically, ATS programs need to get better. Paper Punishment! I didn't like the one we had, but I'll tell you that when we didn't have it, things were worse. Term Paper About Abortion! It didn't complete solve the problem, but it helped me reach more people. I was more efficient in my job, and as the only recruiter for my company, I felt more in control.

In regards to #3, I think recruiters are constantly trying to do their job better. In our field, what slows us down is what we usually think about. If something slows us down, we are to paper, blame. For that reason, the ATS is critical. When it fails (which does happen), it hurts us. I think that's why many don't like their ATS, or at least want something better. Great points in #4.

Regards to #5, completely forgot to mention keywords in the post. Excellent! I shouldn't have wrote it at 3am! If recruiters aren't trained on key word searching, then they are missing out. But if they don't know what key words to search, then they probably have larger issues. Thanks again for the kind words and difference between and persuasive essay, your thoughts!

Seriously, WTF? It sounds like ATS systems are the dumbest thing on the planet, HR people hate them, and capital paper punishment, yet they keep using them because . . . why? Why hasn't sheer demand forced the companies that make these systems create something acceptable? And yet job seekers are still expected to sift through endless conflicting sources of schubert essay, advice despite the fact that almost nothing they will do can give them a reasonable chance of paper, not being rejected by schubert an idiotic system? I suppose I am lucky that I am in an industry (architecture) where most firms are far too small to use such systems. Punishment Research! At least if I am rejected, it's most often by a human being who has actually at least glanced at my resume, instead of conflict, a computer system that doesn't properly do the job it was designed to capital paper punishment, do even half the time. Sheesh. Hey there, Rich, I'm interested in hearing more about Steve's #4 and your original point #3: If you send a PDF resume and capital, receive an automatic response, it might be in your best interest to apply again, this time with Word formatted resume.

I've thought about applying multiple times with different formats, but hesitated on the grounds that it would be redundant, annoying and perceived as unprofessional. You've changed my mind! I still have questions though: Steve's answer was limited to one application with multiple file formats, but it didn't exclude the capital multiple applications idea. What do you think of this idea, Steve? Also, Rich, your original point #3 is capital paper punishment research, not be a popular alternative in punishment, the comments, and teaching research paper, I'm not sure why, since it appears to solve the file format problem nicely and capital paper punishment, increase visibility in the ATS. Could you expound on difference, this more, and maybe take a stab at the reasons why someone might not use multiple applications? Also, do you have any resources about the various ATS systems in use? Where and how can I find information about the capabilities of capital punishment, each system? I understand the the rules of the job hunt are not determined by me.

I must humbly conform to the needs of HR representatives, and I do. That being said, I can still grumble grumble a little at this. As a mac user (like many others), I save my resumes as PDFs before submitting. I can save as a Word doc, but I have had issues in the past with formatting not saving properly. I find it hard to imagine that these HR professionals aren't aware that they are missing out on a number of candidates because of a PDF submission. Unless they are looking to filter out as many candidates as possible, why would they intentionally use a software that completely ignores a number of candidates that may be the perfect fit for and innovation essay, a position? Is it just that they don't understand the paper software or does it make their job easier by cutting the number of candidates? Can't say I like it, but I understand your point and will take your advice to submit .doc's going forward.

Hi Erin - thanks for your comment! Perfectly understand your grumbling, and you aren't alone. It's not something that I love about the system. It's just how it is. But I'll say this. As a resume reviewer, I care LESS about the multicultural teaching paper format, than I do about the content. The purpose of the ATS is to organize your information once you're in the system. If your content is solid, I'll probably find you in there and review your information. If the capital punishment research format is messed up, I'll still consider you if the adorno information is good. Format is paper research, less important than content and grammar. That's key to understand.

But. if you do have the and innovation PDF and it doesn't come through, then I'm not even able to read your content. Why do people use it? A large company may receive 500 resumes per paper research, day. They simply can not open each one in an email. It would clog their email and they'd miss many people.

It's not that recruiters don't understand the entrepreneurship essay software, it's that the software doesn't understand PDF's. That needs to change, and capital research, I'm sure in the next couple years that will absolutely change. Thanks again for kill mockingbird, your thoughts! J.R.R. Tolkien: A Biographical Sketch. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was a major scholar of the capital paper punishment research English language, specialising in Old and adorno schubert essay Middle English. Twice Professor of capital punishment, Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at conflict the University of Oxford, he also wrote a number of stories, including most famously The Hobbit (1937) and capital punishment research The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), which are set in a pre-historic era in an invented version of our world which he called by and innovation essay, the Middle English name of research, Middle-earth. This was peopled by Men (and women), Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, Orcs (or Goblins) and of course Hobbits. He has regularly been condemned by the Eng.

Lit. Teaching Research Paper? establishment, with honourable exceptions, but loved by literally millions of readers worldwide. In the 1960s he was taken up by punishment research, many members of the nascent “counter-culture” largely because of his concern with environmental issues. In 1997 he came top of three British polls, organised respectively by paper about abortion, Channel 4 / Waterstone’s, the Folio Society, and capital paper punishment SFX, the UK’s leading science fiction media magazine, amongst discerning readers asked to vote for the greatest book of the between essay 20th century. Please note also that his name is spelt Tolkien (there is no “Tolkein”). The name “Tolkien” (pron.: Tol-keen; equal stress on both syllables) is believed to punishment research, be of German origin; Toll-kuhn: foolishly brave, or stupidly clever – hence the pseudonym “Oxymore” which he occasionally used. Entrepreneurship? His father’s side of the family appears to capital, have migrated from Saxony in the 18th century, but over the century and a half before his birth had become thoroughly Anglicised. Certainly his father, Arthur Reuel Tolkien, considered himself nothing if not English. Arthur was a bank clerk, and went to South Africa in the 1890s for better prospects of promotion. There he was joined by his bride, Mabel Suffield, whose family were not only English through and through, but West Midlands since time immemorial. So John Ronald (“Ronald” to family and early friends) was born in Bloemfontein, S.A., on 3 January 1892.

His memories of Africa were slight but vivid, including a scary encounter with a large hairy spider, and adorno schubert essay influenced his later writing to some extent; slight, because on 15 February 1896 his father died, and he, his mother and his younger brother Hilary returned to England – or more particularly, the West Midlands. The West Midlands in Tolkien’s childhood were a complex mixture of the grimly industrial Birmingham conurbation, and the quintessentially rural stereotype of England, Worcestershire and capital punishment surrounding areas: Severn country, the land of the composers Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Gurney, and more distantly the poet A. E. Housman (it is also just across the border from Wales). Tolkien’s life was split between these two: the then very rural hamlet of about abortion, Sarehole, with its mill, just south of Birmingham; and darkly urban Birmingham itself, where he was eventually sent to King Edward’s School. Paper? By then the family had moved to King’s Heath, where the house backed onto a railway line – young Ronald’s developing linguistic imagination was engaged by the sight of coal trucks going to and from South Wales bearing destinations like” Nantyglo”,” Penrhiwceiber” and multicultural research “Senghenydd”. Then they moved to punishment research, the somewhat more pleasant Birmingham suburb of Edgbaston.

However, in the meantime, something of capital punishment, profound significance had occurred, which estranged Mabel and her children from both sides of the family: in 1900, together with her sister May, she was received into research the Roman Catholic Church. From then on, both Ronald and Hilary were brought up in the faith of Pio Nono, and difference and persuasive essay remained devout Catholics throughout their lives. The parish priest who visited the family regularly was the half-Spanish half-Welsh Father Francis Morgan. Tolkien family life was generally lived on the genteel side of poverty. Capital Paper Punishment Research? However, the situation worsened in 1904, when Mabel Tolkien was diagnosed as having diabetes, usually fatal in those pre-insulin days. She died on 14 November of and innovation, that year leaving the two orphaned boys effectively destitute. At this point Father Francis took over, and made sure of the boys’ material as well as spiritual welfare, although in the short term they were boarded with an unsympathetic aunt-by-marriage, Beatrice Suffield, and then with a Mrs Faulkner. By this time Ronald was already showing remarkable linguistic gifts. He had mastered the Latin and Greek which was the staple fare of an arts education at capital research that time, and was becoming more than competent in a number of between expository and persuasive, other languages, both modern and ancient, notably Gothic, and later Finnish.

He was already busy making up his own languages, purely for fun. He had also made a number of research, close friends at King Edward’s; in his later years at school they met regularly after hours as the “T. C. B. Abortion? S.” (Tea Club, Barrovian Society, named after their meeting place at the Barrow Stores) and they continued to correspond closely and research exchange and criticise each other’s literary work until 1916. However, another complication had arisen. Amongst the lodgers at term Mrs Faulkner’s boarding house was a young woman called Edith Bratt. When Ronald was 16, and punishment research she 19, they struck up a friendship, which gradually deepened. Eventually Father Francis took a hand, and paper punishment research forbade Ronald to capital punishment research, see or even correspond with Edith for paper research three years, until he was 21. Ronald stoically obeyed this injunction to capital research, the letter.

In the summer of 1911, he was invited to join a party on a walking holiday in schubert, Switzerland, which may have inspired his descriptions of the capital research Misty Mountains, and of Rivendell. In the autumn of that year he went up to Exeter College, Oxford where he stayed, immersing himself in the Classics, Old English, the Germanic languages (especially Gothic), Welsh and Finnish, until 1913, when he swiftly though not without difficulty picked up the entrepreneurship threads of his relationship with Edith. He then obtained a disappointing second class degree in Honour Moderations, the “midway” stage of a 4-year Oxford “Greats” (i.e. Classics) course, although with an paper punishment, “alpha plus” in philology. Adorno Schubert? As a result of this he changed his school from Classics to paper punishment research, the more congenial English Language and Literature. One of the poems he discovered in the course of his Old English studies was the Crist of Cynewulf – he was amazed especially by the cryptic couplet: Eala Earendel engla beorhtast. Ofer middangeard monnum sended. Which translates as: Hail Earendel brightest of angels, over Middle Earth sent to men. (“ Middangeard ” was an ancient expression for the everyday world between Heaven above and Hell below.)

This inspired some of teaching paper, his very early and inchoate attempts at realising a world of ancient beauty in his versifying. In the capital paper punishment research summer of 1913 he took a job as tutor and escort to two Mexican boys in Dinard, France, a job which ended in tragedy. Though no fault of Ronald’s, it did nothing to counter his apparent predisposition against schubert essay France and things French. Meanwhile the capital research relationship with Edith was going more smoothly. Essay? She converted to Catholicism and moved to Warwick, which with its spectacular castle and beautiful surrounding countryside made a great impression on research, Ronald. However, as the essay pair were becoming ever closer, the nations were striving ever more furiously together, and war eventually broke out in August 1914. Unlike so many of punishment, his contemporaries, Tolkien did not rush to join up immediately on the outbreak of war, but returned to Oxford, where he worked hard and kill mockingbird finally achieved a first-class degree in capital research, June 1915. Capital Research? At this time he was also working on various poetic attempts, and on his invented languages, especially one that he came to call Qenya [ sic ], which was heavily influenced by Finnish – but he still felt the punishment research lack of a connecting thread to bring his vivid but disparate imaginings together.

Tolkien finally enlisted as a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers whilst working on ideas of teaching research, Earendel [ sic ] the Mariner, who became a star, and his journeyings. For many months Tolkien was kept in boring suspense in England, mainly in Staffordshire. Finally it appeared that he must soon embark for France, and he and Edith married in Warwick on 22 March 1916. Eventually he was indeed sent to active duty on the Western Front, just in time for the Somme offensive. After four months in and out of the trenches, he succumbed to “trench fever”, a form of typhus-like infection common in the insanitary conditions, and in early November was sent back to England, where he spent the capital paper punishment research next month in punishment, hospital in Birmingham. By Christmas he had recovered sufficiently to stay with Edith at Great Haywood in Staffordshire. During these last few months, all but one of his close friends of the “T. C. B. S.” had been killed in action. Partly as an act of research, piety to their memory, but also stirred by reaction against his war experiences, he had already begun to multicultural, put his stories into shape, “ … in huts full of blasphemy and smut, or by candle light in bell-tents, even some down in dugouts under shell fire ” [ Letters 66].

This ordering of his imagination developed into the Book of Lost Tales (not published in his lifetime), in which most of the major stories of the paper Silmarillion appear in their first form: tales of the Elves and the “Gnomes”, (i. e. Deep Elves, the later Noldor), with their languages Qenya and Goldogrin. Here are found the first recorded versions of the wars against Morgoth, the siege and fall of Gondolin and Nargothrond, and essay the tales of Turin and of Beren and Luthien. Throughout 1917 and 1918 his illness kept recurring, although periods of remission enabled him to do home service at capital paper various camps sufficiently well to be promoted to lieutenant. It was when he was stationed in paper, the Hull area that he and capital paper Edith went walking in the woods at nearby Roos, and there in a grove thick with hemlock Edith danced for him. This was the conflict kill mockingbird essay inspiration for capital paper punishment research the tale of Beren and Luthien, a recurrent theme in his “Legendarium”. He came to think of Edith as “Luthien” and himself as “Beren”. Their first son, John Francis Reuel (later Father John Tolkien) had already been born on 16 November 1917. When the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918, Tolkien had already been putting out feelers to obtain academic employment, and by the time he was demobilised he had been appointed Assistant Lexicographer on the New English Dictionary (the “Oxford English Dictionary”), then in preparation. While doing the serious philological work involved in this, he also gave one of his Lost Tales its first public airing – he read The Fall of Gondolin to the Exeter College Essay Club, where it was well received by an audience which included Neville Coghill and difference expository Hugo Dyson, two future “Inklings”.

However, Tolkien did not stay in this job for long. In the summer of 1920 he applied for the quite senior post of Reader (approximately, Associate Professor) in English Language at the University of Leeds, and to his surprise was appointed. At Leeds as well as teaching he collaborated with E. V. Gordon on the famous edition of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight , and continued writing and refining The Book of Lost Tales and his invented “Elvish” languages. Research? In addition, he and Gordon founded a “Viking Club” for undergraduates devoted mainly to reading Old Norse sagas and drinking beer. Term Introduction? It was for this club that he and Gordon originally wrote their Songs for the Philologists , a mixture of traditional songs and original verses translated into Old English, Old Norse and Gothic to fit traditional English tunes. Leeds also saw the birth of two more sons: Michael Hilary Reuel in October 1920, and Christopher Reuel in 1924.

Then in 1925 the Rawlinson and Bosworth Professorship of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford fell vacant; Tolkien successfully applied for the post. Professor Tolkien, The Inklings and capital research Hobbits. In a sense, in returning to Oxford as a Professor, Tolkien had come home. Although he had few illusions about the academic life as a haven of unworldly scholarship (see for example Letters 250), he was nevertheless by temperament a don’s don, and fitted extremely well into the largely male world of teaching, research, the comradely exchange of between and persuasive, ideas and capital paper research occasional publication. In fact, his academic publication record is very sparse, something that would have been frowned upon in term paper abortion, these days of quantitative personnel evaluation. However, his rare scholarly publications were often extremely influential, most notably his lecture “Beowulf, the capital paper research Monsters and the Critics”. His seemingly almost throwaway comments have sometimes helped to transform the understanding of a particular field – for adorno schubert essay example, in his essay on capital paper punishment, “English and Welsh”, with its explanation of the origins of the term “Welsh” and its references to phonaesthetics (both these pieces are collected in The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays , currently in print). His academic life was otherwise largely unremarkable. Difference Between And Persuasive Essay? In 1945 he changed his chair to the Merton Professorship of English Language and capital paper punishment Literature, which he retained until his retirement in 1959. Apart from all the above, he taught undergraduates, and played an important but unexceptional part in academic politics and administration. His family life was equally straightforward.

Edith bore their last child and only daughter, Priscilla, in 1929. Tolkien got into term abortion the habit of writing the children annual illustrated letters as if from Santa Claus, and a selection of these was published in 1976 as The Father Christmas Letters . He also told them numerous bedtime stories, of which more anon. In adulthood John entered the priesthood, Michael and Christopher both saw war service in the Royal Air Force. Punishment Research? Afterwards Michael became a schoolmaster and Christopher a university lecturer, and Priscilla became a social worker. They lived quietly in North Oxford, and later Ronald and teaching research Edith lived in the suburb of Headington. However, Tolkien’s social life was far from capital punishment unremarkable. He soon became one of the founder members of a loose grouping of Oxford friends (by no means all at the University) with similar interests, known as “The Inklings”. The origins of the name were purely facetious – it had to do with writing, and sounded mildly Anglo-Saxon; there was no evidence that members of the group claimed to have an “inkling” of the Divine Nature, as is sometimes suggested. Other prominent members included the above-mentioned Messrs Coghill and Dyson, as well as Owen Barfield, Charles Williams, and above all C. S. Lewis, who became one of Tolkien’s closest friends, and for whose return to Christianity Tolkien was at least partly responsible. The Inklings regularly met for conversation, drink, and frequent reading from their work-in-progress.

Meanwhile Tolkien continued developing his mythology and languages. And Innovation Essay? As mentioned above, he told his children stories, some of capital punishment, which he developed into essay those published posthumously as Mr. Bliss , Roverandom , etc. However, according to his own account, one day when he was engaged in paper punishment, the soul-destroying task of marking examination papers, he discovered that one candidate had left one page of an answer-book blank. On this page, moved by who knows what anarchic daemon, he wrote “ In a hole in entrepreneurship essay, the ground there lived a hobbit “. In typical Tolkien fashion, he then decided he needed to find out what a Hobbit was, what sort of a hole it lived in, why it lived in a hole, etc. From this investigation grew a tale that he told to his younger children, and even passed round.

In 1936 an incomplete typescript of it came into the hands of Susan Dagnall, an employee of the punishment research publishing firm of George Allen and Unwin (merged in 1990 with HarperCollins). She asked Tolkien to finish it, and presented the complete story to Stanley Unwin, the then Chairman of the firm. He tried it out on his 10-year old son Rayner, who wrote an multicultural paper, approving report, and punishment research it was published as The Hobbit in 1937. It immediately scored a success, and has not been out of capital punishment research, children’s recommended reading lists ever since. It was so successful that Stanley Unwin asked if he had any more similar material available for publication. By this time Tolkien had begun to capital, make his Legendarium into what he believed to be a more presentable state, and as he later noted, hints of it had already made their way into The Hobbit . He was now calling the full account Quenta Silmarillion , or Silmarillion for conflict kill short. He presented some of his “completed” tales to Unwin, who sent them to his reader. The reader’s reaction was mixed: dislike of the poetry and praise for the prose (the material was the story of Beren and Luthien) but the overall decision at capital paper punishment research the time was that these were not commercially publishable. Unwin tactfully relayed this message to Tolkien, but asked him again if he was willing to write a sequel to The Hobbit . Tolkien was disappointed at the apparent failure of The Silmarillion , but agreed to take up the schubert essay challenge of capital paper punishment research, “The New Hobbit”. This soon developed into something much more than a children’s story; for multicultural teaching paper the highly complex 16-year history of research, what became The Lord of the Rings consult the works listed below. Suffice it to say that the now adult Rayner Unwin was deeply involved in the later stages of this opus, dealing magnificently with a dilatory and temperamental author who, at one stage, was offering the term paper introduction abortion whole work to a commercial rival (which rapidly backed off when the capital punishment scale and nature of the package became apparent).

It is thanks to Rayner Unwin’s advocacy that we owe the fact that this book was published at all – Andave laituvalmes ! His father’s firm decided to incur the probable loss of ?1,000 for the succes d’estime , and adorno publish it under the title of The Lord of the Rings in three parts during 1954 and 1955, with USA rights going to Houghton Mifflin. It soon became apparent that both author and publishers had greatly underestimated the work’s public appeal. The Lord of the Rings rapidly came to public notice. It had mixed reviews, ranging from the ecstatic (W. Capital Paper Punishment Research? H. Auden, C. S. Lewis) to the damning (E. Wilson, E. Muir, P. Toynbee) and just about everything in between.

The BBC put on a drastically condensed radio adaptation in 12 episodes on the Third Programme. In 1956 radio was still a dominant medium in Britain, and the Third Programme was the “intellectual” channel. So far from losing money, sales so exceeded the break-even point as to schubert essay, make Tolkien regret that he had not taken early retirement. However, this was still based only upon hardback sales. The really amazing moment was when The Lord of the Rings went into a pirated paperback version in paper research, 1965. Firstly, this put the book into the impulse-buying category; and secondly, the publicity generated by the copyright dispute alerted millions of American readers to the existence of between, something outside their previous experience, but which appeared to speak to their condition. Paper? By 1968 The Lord of the paper introduction about abortion Rings had almost become the Bible of the “Alternative Society”. This development produced mixed feelings in paper, the author.

On the term introduction about abortion one hand, he was extremely flattered, and to his amazement, became rather rich. On the other, he could only deplore those whose idea of a great trip was to ingest The Lord of the Rings and LSD simultaneously. Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick had similar experiences with 2001: A Space Odyssey . Fans were causing increasing problems; both those who came to capital paper punishment research, gawp at his house and those, especially from between and persuasive essay California who telephoned at 7 p.m. (their time – 3 a.m. his), to demand to capital research, know whether Frodo had succeeded or failed in the Quest, what was the preterite of Quenyan lanta -, or whether or not Balrogs had wings. So he changed addresses, his telephone number went ex-directory, and eventually he and Edith moved to Bournemouth, a pleasant but uninspiring South Coast resort (Hardy’s “Sandbourne”), noted for the number of its elderly well-to-do residents. Meanwhile the cult, not just of Tolkien, but of the paper abortion fantasy literature that he had revived, if not actually inspired (to his dismay), was really taking off – but that is paper punishment, another story, to be told in another place. Despite all the fuss over The Lord of the Rings , between 1925 and his death Tolkien did write and publish a number of paper introduction about, other articles, including a range of scholarly essays, many reprinted in The Monsters and the Critics and Other Essays (see above); one Middle-earth related work, The Adventures of Tom Bombadil ; editions and translations of Middle English works such as the Ancrene Wisse , Sir Gawain , Sir Orfeo and capital research The Pearl , and some stories independent of the Legendarium, such as the Imram , The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm’s Son , The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun – and, especially, Farmer Giles of paper introduction about, Ham , Leaf by Niggle , and Smith of Wootton Major . The flow of publications was only capital punishment temporarily slowed by Tolkien’s death.

The long-awaited Silmarillion , edited by Christopher Tolkien, appeared in 1977. In 1980 Christopher also published a selection of his father’s incomplete writings from his later years under the title of Unfinished Tales of and innovation essay, Numenor and Middle-earth . In the introduction to this work Christopher Tolkien referred in passing to punishment research, The Book of term about abortion, Lost Tales , “itself a very substantial work, of the utmost interest to paper punishment research, one concerned with the origins of Middle-earth, but requiring to be presented in a lengthy and complex study, if at all” ( Unfinished Tales , p. 6, paragraph 1). The sales of The Silmarillion had rather taken George Allen Unwin by surprise, and those of Unfinished Tales even more so. Obviously, there was a market even for this relatively abstruse material and they decided to conflict essay, risk embarking on this “lengthy and complex study”. Even more lengthy and complex than expected, the resulting 12 volumes of the History of Middle-earth , under Christopher’s editorship, proved to be a successful enterprise. (Tolkien’s publishers had changed hands, and names, several times between the start of the enterprise in 1983 and the appearance of the paperback edition of capital paper punishment, Volume 12, The Peoples of Middle-earth , in 1997.)

After his retirement in capital, 1959 Edith and Ronald moved to Bournemouth. On 29 November 1971 Edith died, and Ronald soon returned to capital paper, Oxford, to multicultural research, rooms provided by Merton College. Ronald died on 2 September 1973. He and Edith are buried together in a single grave in the Catholic section of Wolvercote cemetery in the northern suburbs of capital paper punishment, Oxford. (The grave is schubert essay, well signposted from the entrance.) The legend on the headstone reads: Edith Mary Tolkien, Luthien, 1889-1971. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, Beren, 1892-1973.

Hard hat, lunch pail: The myth of toughness in capital punishment, Chicago sports. Bronko Nagurski, Steve Mongo McMichael, and Mike Ditka helped define the Chicago Bears' tough-guy image. It was not by accident that F. Scott Fitzgerald's big-shouldered Tom Buchanan was Tom Buchanan of Chicago. Not even the effeminate swank of his riding clothes could hide the enormous power of that body, wrote Fitzgerald of The Great Gatsby 's leading jerkface. Mockingbird. Long Island had its froufrou effects on a man, for sure, but the brawn of Chicago could not be disguised: . . . you could see a great pack of muscle shifting when his shoulder moved under his thin coat. It's no surprise that Fitzgerald is channeling Carl Sandburg's 1914 identification of Chicago as the City of the paper punishment Big Shoulders; after all, it is hard to imagine a city as collectively obsessed with a single poem as Chicago is with Sandburg's Chicago. San Francisco has its Beats, yes, and New York might sometimes tune itself to the lyrical sentiments of adorno schubert essay, George M. Cohan, Comden and paper punishment research Green, Kander and punishment Ebb, or Nas, but Sandburg's poemwith its emphasis on the manly and machobecame Chicago's imbibed creed, an unconscious template for the city's cops and gangsters, union bosses and anti-labor thugs . . . and its athletes. Capital Research. Here, writes Sandburg, is a tall bold slugger set vivid against the little soft cities.

The fictional Tom Buchanan was himself a jockone of the most powerful ends that ever played football at New Havenand as the 20th century progressed, Chicago's most heralded professional sports teams were ones deemed to adorno essay be most possessed with the sweating spirit of capital, Sandburg's husky and brawling proletarians. There have been exemplars of this mighty, striving figure across all Chicago sportsMan of Steel middleweight Tony Zale, scrap-happy hockey hunk Keith Magnusonbut the most indelible model was the expository and persuasive Chicago Bears football team of the early 1940s, dubbed Monsters of the Midway. Even their intrasquad scrimmages were opportunities (echoing Sandburg) to be alive and coarse and strong and cunning. Or, quoting a Chicago Tribune headline of the time: Bear Practice Makes Trench Warfare Mild. Research. The franchise star was Bronko Nagurski, whose very name seemed to conflict mockingbird essay epitomize the bone-crushing power of the capital paper research man. This was an Iron Age of iron men, and Chicago teams ever since have strived to multicultural paper live up to the brutish standards of capital punishment research, their fore-Bears. The second coming of these Monsters cameor so the conflict kill mockingbird narrative goeswith the 1963 championship edition of the capital Bears. The ethos of this oh-so-prototypical Bears team? Grind it out on the gridiron, a no-nonsense approach in marked contrast to the flash and sizzle of, say, New York Jets quarterback Broadway Joe Namatha man known as much for his fur coats and paper punishment research the effeminate swank of his pantyhose ads (definitely worth a YouTube search) as for his Super Bowl victory in paper, 1969. The legend continued. A key member of that '63 Bears team, tough-guy Mike Ditka, went on to coach a thirdand the most famousiteration of the entrepreneurship and innovation essay Monsters: the 1985 champs.

Firmly within the tradition, this team eschewed the emerging pass-oriented West Coast Offense popularized by the San Francisco 49ers, preferring a more pounding, ground-based style. Ditka emphasized the contrast between a Chicago team and a coastal team when he told the Chicago Sun-Times (in an punishment research, article printed under the bizarre headline Bears' image ethnic classy) that: There are teams that are fair-haired and there are teams that aren't. There are teams named Smith and teams named Grabowski. Conflict Mockingbird. The [Los Angeles] Rams are a Smith. We're a Grabowski. The city's myth-makers were enthralled. Paul Galloway followed up in the Tribune with the thesis that Chicagothe city itselfwas a Grabowski. Grabowski means people who come from a working-class, immigrant background, people who work hard and have nothing handed to them, people who have struggled against discrimination, people who are honest and tough, people who persevere and prevail . . Capital Punishment. . It's the shot-and-a-beer, hard-hat lunch-bucket guy who gets his muscles through toil versus the expository and persuasive essay white-collar, white-wine, striped-tie stuffed shirt who tones his in capital research, a health club.

The Bears' star defensive tackle, Steve Mongo McMichael (nicknamed, yes, after the character in Blazing Saddles who punches a horse), proved himself well inculcated with the local civic literature when he (or, OK, perhaps his ghostwriter) wrote in a memoir: Carl Sandburg was close when he titled Chicago as the City of between essay, Big Shoulders [sic]. He just didn't go far enough; Chicago is the City of Big Shoulder Pads. Chicago fans want to love their Bears because the paper Bears are much of what Chicagoans like about difference between expository themselves: Big. Tough. Champions. Let us now pause a moment in our narrative to acknowledge that: No. Any reasonable census of the city's citizenry would find several residents who are neither big nor tough, and whose sense of self-worth might in fact be based on research, factors beyond hat size and hardiness. This census might even reveal a few who don't care a whit about the city's professional sports teams.

Or about Carl Sandburg. Yes, because Chicago is entrepreneurship essay flat and far from any saltwater sea, it is easy to imagine its people as down-to-earth. Because it was once home to capital paper punishment International Harvester and Zenith Radio Corp and the Industrial Workers of the World, it is teaching research easy to capital punishment conjure the image of capital research, boulevards filled with muscled stevedores, boilermakers, welders, and tanners. And because of a capable poet's sound bites, it is easy to punishment research encapsulate these mythologies in paper, newspaper columns, sports memoirs, andto be surein this essay. Excerpted by permission from Rust Belt Chicago: An Anthology , a collection of essays, poetry, and fiction out now from Belt Publishing. All rights reserved. Let us also acknowledge that Chicagowith its historical dependence on capital paper research, its financial markets and tourism industryhas had no greater share of capital research, Galloway's Grabowskis than its midwestern rivals. Capital Punishment. And that plenty of large American citieseven those little soft cities on the coasts!have their own proud-and-not-so-proud histories in entrepreneurship and innovation, industrial manufacturing, their own beleaguered working classes, their own Golden Gloves competitions, their own propensities to capital paper research see their sports heroes and working-class heroes as tough. Furthermore, let us acknowledge that there was much about the '85 Bears' cast of paper introduction, characters that did not fit the white working-class Grabowski model:

• Three of its four first-team All-Pro players were African-Americans from the south (Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, and Richard Dent). • Key defensive back Gary Fencik was (uh-huh, like Tom Buchanan) a Yale man. • They were total big-media darlings. First and foremost among these nascent TV stars was William Refrigerator Perry, a 325-pound rookie defensive lineman occasionally insertedin a bit of Ditka gimmickryas running back or receiver. His success on paper punishment, Monday Night Football led to appearances on Letterman , The Tonight Show , and and innovation The Bob Hope Christmas Special . • Their embrace of paper punishment research, Hollywood-style glitz was consummated with the midseason release of the single and difference between expository MTV-style video The Super Bowl Shuffle. (Well, they call me Sweetness / And I like to dance / Runnin' the capital punishment ball is like makin' romance.) It hit number 41 on the Billboard charts.

The falseness of the Grabowski characterization, however, did not stop new generations of sportswriters from reviving it whenever they had a chance. The Tom Thibodeau-coached Chicago Bulls (2010-'15), were justifiably praised for their hustle and research hard work on the basketball court. Thibodeau, according to Grantland's Andrew Sharp, built a team that brought every blue-collar cliche to life. The Thibs Bulls were everything Chicago likes to imagine about itself. The Bulls' television color commentator, Stacey King, was a ready-and-willing sloganeer for this sentiment: Center Joakim Noah was heart, hustle, and muscle. Forward Taj Gibson's stalwart play was hard hat, lunch paila phrase that echoed Galloway's Grabowski essay and embodied blue-collar pride: the research hard hat versus the homburg, the lunch pail versus the multicultural research three-martini lunch. But in 2015, Bulls management tired of the bristling Thibodeau and replaced him with the mild-mannered and decidedly fair-haired Fred Hoiberg. Almost immediately, an existential Grabowski crisis ensued: We just get out-toughed sometimes, star guard Jimmy Butler told the news media. Research. You can call it being soft, whatever you want to call it. The city's incipient self-doubt is exacerbated by essay the fact that its most accomplished basketballer is not manly at capital, all. In fact, she is a woman: the Chicago Sky's Elena Della Donne.

And while no one who has seen the WNBA's reigning MVP in action would question her toughness, it ispredictablynot the and innovation essay focus of the local media: a recent Chicago magazine profile leads with her gliding through the glitterati at a swank TriBeCa gala. No hard hat or lunch pail in sight. (Females, it must be said, have always been sidelined in this vision of a team or city of Grabowskis, just as they were sidelined in Sandburg's poem. They appear in Chicago only capital paper punishment as painted women under the gas lamps luring the farm boys or in the line: On the term introduction about abortion faces of capital paper research, women and children I have seen the marks of difference between and persuasive, wanton hunger. Paper Punishment Research. In other words, as whores or mothers, sirens or victims.) Meanwhile, Chicago's top sports story in this year of essay, 2016 was, of course, the World Champion Cubs. They were extraordinary, but were they Monsters of the Midway? Let's see: • Their president, Theo Epstein, is a Yale-schooled technocrat known for a Moneyball approach; whereas baseball teams of yore were assembled by tobacco-spitting old-timers with gimlet eyes for baseball talent, Moneyballers prefer to base personnel decisions on computer algorithms.

• Their coach, like Mike Ditka, hails from paper punishment research small-town Pennsylvania. But Joe Maddon is no Ditka. He's a tie-dye-wearing self-proclaimed hippie. Conflict Mockingbird Essay. He drives a van he calls his Shaggin' Wagon. • Pictures of capital paper, their young star, National League MVP Kris Bryant, blanketed the interiors of teaching, dozens of el train cars; he looked dapper as all get out in capital research, the luxury cottons of his sponsor, Express Inc. • Their newly refurbished clubhouse hardly has the vibe of a blue-collar hang-out. Between And Persuasive Essay. Says the Tribune , The space is replete with polished chrome and mood lighting, exuding a nightclub feel without the bar. There's even a fog machine. • Their owner is an investment banker. In other words, the Cubs' image is neither husky nor brawling.

Recent Bears squads, too, seem less than monstrous. They made it to the Super Bowl once more, in capital paper research, 2007, with a style again emphasizing running and defense. But that team's coach, Lovie Smith, was replaced with Marc Trestman, a man with the conflict mockingbird look and demeanor of a downtown architect or Mercantile Exchange execone of the white-collar professionals left out of the capital paper punishment research Grabowski version of the metropolis, and decidedly omitted from Sandburg's vision of hog butchers, tool makers, freight handlers, and stackers of wheat. About Abortion. Trestman was known as the capital paper research Quarterback Whisperer, a man who could unleash the skills of his underachieving (and reputedly soft ) quarterback Jay Cutler. A coach who whispers ? In Chicago ? Trestman's tenure as coach was mercifully short, but still enoughalong with the listless Bulls and flashy Cubsto undermine the city's tough-guy bona fides. Pundits wishing to invoke the Chicago-versus-the-coasts narrative were forced now to rely on historic precedent rather than current exploits. 2016's iteration of the difference between expository and persuasive essay theme, then, pitted the Golden State Warriorswho won 73 of their 82 regular season basketball gamesagainst the memory of the paper research 1996 Chicago Bulls, who held the previous high-water mark, having won 72. Partisans of term paper introduction abortion, those Bullspredictablyinvoked toughness. Paper. The game in 1996, we were told, was a rougher affair, with rules that allowed more contact, and and innovation enforcement policies that left egregious, violent fouls unpunished. Those Bulls collectively played what was known as the Doberman Defense. (Fierce as a dog, went Sandburg's Chicago metaphor, with tongue lapping for capital research action.) This physical style contrasted with the Showtime Lakers of coastal Los Angeles, the team that these Michael Jordan-era Bulls had supplanted as dynastic titlists.

Jordanacclaimed the greatest basketball player everhad a blue-collar background, the son of a General Electric forklift operator. The Warriors' lithe star, Steph Curry, on between, the other hand, lacks a working-class pedigree. His fatherDell Currywas himself an accomplished and moneyed professional baller. Steph's success on the court is based not on overpowering his adversaries, but on the ability to launch parabolic shots from improbable distances. Surely, Chicago's pundits said, the capital paper punishment research fey artistry of this Golden State team (its nameGoldenstanding in sun-splashed contrast to the drear grays of Chicago) could not withstand the aggression of the '96 Bulls. The supposed dichotomy between the two teams' style and substance evaporates under any real scrutiny, of abortion, course: the scrawny Curry, it turns out, is sneaky-strong, and can deadlift 400 pounds.

Conversely, Jordan was (and is) a pitchman for Hanes undergarments, while his teammate Dennis the Worm Rodman made a splash by punishment research appearing in public in a wedding dress. Surely, any sports iconography based on rigid assumptions about strength, power, and gender is ripe for debunking. And yet the Grabowski iconography persists, defying its own contradictions. So we exhume a Bulls team from two decades ago in order to overcome our anxietyperhaps an anxiety with Freudian undertonesover our present softness . This exercise in rhetorical resurrection mirrors other attempts to recover a supposedly triumphant blue-collar past: It is critical that we bring back manufacturing jobs to introduction about abortion Illinois, tweets Illinois governor Bruce Rauner. And of course, Make America great again, says Donald Trump. Like the sports fan nostalgic for MJ and Scottie, we reminisce about the capital paper research days when we could stroll down Cortland Avenue and conflict essay see men smelting vats of molten metal through the open doors of punishment, Finkl Sons Steel; we boast of the adorno essay city's former industrial grit and grime (before Mayor Daley the Younger prettied up the research north side with roadside flowers and European-style newspaper vending boxes). We are borne back ceaselessly into entrepreneurship the past. No matter that Chicago's resumé in manufacturing is capital punishment inflated; no matter that our honored Monsters were not really so monstrous: Our politicians will feed our nostalgia because feeding nostalgia is about good politics. They will invoke Sandburgian imagery in a futile attempt to brand Chicago as a ready-and-willing player in heartland economics. They will emphasize the town's (or the state's, or the capital country's) masculinity in difference between expository essay, the hopes that it willin the eyes of votersenhance their own.

They will don the paper punishment research hard hat for photo ops, they will invoke the lunch pail at editorial board meetings, they will indulge in sports cliches. Because, after all, when the going gets tough . . . v. Postscript, March 2017: Elena Della Donne has been traded, Donald Trump is president, and the themes of coastal elites, heartland virility, and white, working-class Grabowskis have never been more destructive, nor more ripe for deconstruction.
